Notarisation is frequently asked for and rarely explained. Knowing what it actually does will save you paying for it when you do not need it — and stop you assuming it gives you protection it does not.
What notarisation is
A notary verifies the identity of the person signing and attests that the signature was made before them, then records it in the notarial register. It confirms who signed, and that they signed.
What it is not
Notarisation is not registration. Registration is a separate act at the sub-registrar's office that puts a document on the public record. A notarised document is not a registered one, and no amount of notarisation substitutes for registration where the law requires it.
It also does not make the contents true, legal or enforceable. A notary attests the signature, not the substance. An unfair clause does not become fair by being notarised.
Sign in front of the notary, not before you arrive
This trips people up constantly. Bring the document unsigned. The whole point is that the signature happens in the notary's presence — a document you signed at home defeats the purpose and will usually have to be redone.

Cost and timing
Notarisation starts from ₹200. It is quick — usually a few minutes once everyone signing is present with ID. The delay is almost never the notary; it is waiting for a second signatory to arrive.
Ask before you pay
Plenty of documents are asked to be notarised out of habit rather than requirement. If you are not sure, ask the bank, school or office receiving it whether they actually need notarisation. They will answer in a sentence, and you may save the fee. We would rather tell you that than take ₹200 for something you did not need.
